3-D WALKING GAIT ANALYSIS
- What is it?
A 3-D Gait Analysis is a 3-dimensional assessment of movement
patterns while walking or running. Computerized data is collected,
analyzed, and interpreted using 3-D cameras, video cameras, and
force plates and used to produce a more objective look at the
movement pattern. This information allows the medical team to
evaluate your walking and chart your progress.
- How is it done?
The reflective markers are placed at specific locations relative
to your lower body through the use of the anthropometric measurements.
In the case of gait analysis, these markers are typically placed
at the hips, low back, thighs, knees, calves, ankles, heels and
feet.
- How long does this take?
A typical gait analysis will take approximately one hour. This
includes introduction, anthropometric measurements, marker placement
and walking.
- What do I wear?
Because the goal of the test is to get an accurate representation
of your current walking pattern, there are specific procedures
to follow. Please wear or bring a pair of shorts to change into
as well as a shirt that can be tucked in or tied above the waistline.
It is important that the markers are placed in a secure manner
and clothing that will move or “flow” can alter the
data. In addition, please wear shoes that you do most of your
normal walking in as you will be performing the test in these
shoes as well as bare feet (so you will need to be prepared to
take your shoes and socks off as well). Stretch shorts such as
cotton or spandex, much like biking shorts or “jammers”
work best and are preferred. Other shorts that are effective are
short to mid-length gym shorts or running shorts. Please do not
wear long shorts or jean shorts as they will inhibit marker placement
and data collection.
- Can I do this on the same day as my doctor’s
appointment?
No. You will need to schedule an appointment specifically for
this test. Once the test is concluded, you will need a follow-up
appointment with the doctor to review your test results.
